There She Blows

Humpbacks are on their way along the Summerland Coast
I spotted three humpbacks on their journey north yesterday off Lennox Head. This is great news and with the weather fine they are relatively easy to spot. Yesterday I tweeted and facebooked the sightings and combined had a reach of over 115 000 potential visitors to our region. Also noticed lots of cars turn up at the headland soon after the tweet and post so perhaps we are also keeping locals advised of the migration.
If you spot any whales please let Summerland know so we can pass on.

This was the last week for surveys to be completed and we are very grateful for your input and feedback.
Thank You all who contributed.
We ARE listening and we intend incorporating as much as we can over the next few months.
Summerland NSW is constantly developing and expanding with new ideas and content.
The feedback, ideas and encouragement have been fantastic.

Hits vs Visits
When it comes to website statistics you often hear the terms 'hits and visits' but what exactly do these mean and how do they benefit you?
What exactly is a 'Hit'?
|
Each page on a website is made up of a number of files and images: put basically, a hit is the number of files and images requested for the page to fully load.
Therefore, one page visit does not equal one hit as most web pages are made up of a number of images and other files which stack up the number of hits counted.
|
 |
So do not be fooled by any smooth talking salesmen talking up the number of 'hits' to a site, what you really want to know if how many visits the website receives and what the average number of page views is - this is what will really indicate your chance for making sales.
What is a 'Visit'?
A "Visit" is one individual visitor, who arrives at your website and then proceeds to browse. A "Unique visit" is someone who is visiting the website for the first time.
So the total number of 'visits' informs you how much traffic the website is actually receiving.
Let's take a look at Summerland NSW for example:
This year alone Summerland NSW has received 1,725,980 hits this is because our website is content rich, full of images, videos, loads of information and interactive content.
This is made up from an outstanding total of 39,658 visits and 346,795 page views a total average of 8-9 page views each visit.
Since our launch in mid 2011, Summerland NSW has received an impressive total of 100,361 visits with a total of 1,167,481 page visits and just in case you were wanting to compare - the number of hits received is 4,989,597.
So I hope this article provides a bit of insight on how to monitor your own website traffic as well as what to consider when advertising online.
Did you know you can see the number of visits your Summerland NSW profile has received by logging in and clicking on 'My Account Details' - where it says 'site visits' this is the number of visits your profile alone has received.
This is a great way for you to monitor the success of your advertisement.
Remember for optimal results keep the content on your website and online profiles fresh and up-to-date and include a range of images to really showcase what your business has on offer.

Rejuvenating Food
Consuming nuts has many health benefits unless you are unfortunate to have intolerances to one variety or all types of nuts. Nuts for most people however, are a wonderful source of vitamins and minerals, natural oils and a great source of protein.
More recent research has shown that eating nuts can lower cholesterol levels and even reduce the chances of coronary heart disease. The omega-fats that are in walnuts for instance may protect you against irregular rhythms of the heart.
Nuts are wonderfully nutritious as long as you can avoid the trap of eating the heavily salted or salted and fried varieties. According to one well regarded source, as little as two ounces of nuts per week is all that is required to lower the heart disease risk.

Ballina Players Presents Chicago
Chicago will Razzle Dazzle 'em
|
Chicago, the show of shows, will soon be dazzling Ballina Players audiences.
From its opening in 1975, through revival productions and an award-winning 2002 film adaptation, Chicago: a Musical Vaudeville has been a long-running hit world-wide.
Set in Prohibition era Chicago, the story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and on the concept of the celebrity criminal.Central characters are the merry murderesses, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.
Famous stage performer Velma (Natalie Havilah) murdered both her husband and her sister when she found them in bed together.
Ambitious and conniving chorus girl Roxie (Lali Gill) murdered her lover and convinced her husband that the victim was a burglar.
|
 |
Roxie and Velma are beautiful headline hunters who hope to gain acquittal and stage careers, so they take every advantage of the corrupt jail system. With the help of the seriously suave celebrity lawyer, Billy Flynn (Mike Sheehan) they achieve the limelight but find that fame does not last.
Roxie and Velma's stories run parallel to the spectacular vaudeville stage show with its powerful song and dance numbers and one liners which have the audience roaring with laughter. The lead actresses bring to their roles considerable experience in musical theatre.
Lali is a veteran of a number of Players youth musicals, as well as Joseph and also Dusty, in which she played Mary O'Brien. A newcomer to Ballina Players, Natalie is a graduate of the Australian Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Eora Centre and performed for many years in Sydney and with the Lismore Theatre Company.
Chicago, directed by Sue and Paul Belsham, will be staged at the Players Theatre from June 15 to July 7, with evening performances at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 2pm.
There will be a 2pm matinee on Saturday July 7
Tickets are available at Just Funkin Music, phone 6686 2440.
Opening night on Friday 15th March is a black tie event, with catering, champagne and a chance to meet the cast after the show. Image above: Velma and Roxie.jpgCaption: The merry murderesses, Velma Kelly (Natalie Havilah) and Roxie Hart (Lali Gill)
Yes we were there and even remember!
Last Saturday marked 39 years since the world-renowned Aquarius Festival was held in Nimbin.
Up to 10,000 people were attracted to the ten-day festival which celebrated alternative thinking and sustainable lifestyles.
Although Nimbin was the site for the Aquarius Festival in 1973, Paul Joseph suggests that 'the 40th anniversary should be celebrated across the Rainbow Region, as there was nothing central about the original festival. Leading up to it, a dialogue could start amongst us asking what the values and spirit of our communities are and let's together make the spirit of the Aquarius Festival real in our lives. If the dialogue starts now, the outcomes could be many and varied crossing the region.'
